Because it is Valentine’s Day and I love our SIMPLE readers, I must share something very important with you today… an ounce of sanity with a side order of fun! As parents, sometimes kid stuff can take over, and we find ourselves eyeball deep in Barney and nursery songs (nothing wrong with them, but boy, they can get old for an adult when they are on repeat!). If you are growing tired of Raffi and can’t stand to hear another song sung by Elmo, say hello to Kindie music – adult friendly music for kids!
Kindie rock is a style of children’s music that “melds the sensibility of the singer-
songwriter with themes aimed at kids under 10.” source: Wikipedia
I have completely fallen in love with emerging Kindie artist Mo Phillips and his upcoming kids’/family album Monster Suit. Groovy, fun, shake-your-bootie music paired with imaginative and clever lyrics make Monster Suit fun for the whole family, not just for the wee ones. I have even listened to it by myself while folding laundry!
Mo’s folksy rock-n-roll music is very catchy, energetic and playful and the lyrics are unique and quirky. This isn’t your typical preschool music – this is seriously fun music that will get you and your kids dancing and singing together.
My favorite song is Droolin’. If you’ve ever been through a toddler’s battle with teething, you will totally relate to this song:
“I put rocks in my mouth, I put socks in my mouth, I put blocks in my mouth – that’s what I be doin’… I’mma sit around here all day long and get up to some droolin’.”
I know you are nodding your head as you imagine the weird things your kids have put in their mouths. Lily likes oranges. Unpeeled ones. Weirdo. *wink*
My second favorite: “Don’t fall off the couch cause the carpet is lava!” Who doesn’t remember pretending that the carpet was some form of dangerous and deadly material and jumping from couch to chair to coffee table to avoid it?! Love it!
Mo’s creative, funny and fun lyrics come directly from his interactions with children as an early childhood educator and a father of two boys. He explains, “I was teaching preschool in Portland. One day, while sitting in the sandbox with some little friends, I wrote the song “Pizza In A Cup” after being offered the umpteenth cup of sand advertised as pizza. All of a sudden these afternoon playground sessions started producing some serious songwriting opportunities.”
Monster Suit releases April 10, 2012 and will be available online at www.mophillips.com, cdbaby.com, and iTunes. If I wasn’t married, I’d ask Mo to be my Valentine! Another favorite lyric, that is so suitable for today: “It doesn’t matter what you do, it’s how you do it. Make sure it’s full of happiness and heart.” my SIMPLE star rating :: 5 out 5
