today i ate a rainbow :: creating tools to help parents raise healthy kids {giveaway}

If you read my posts with any frequency, you know that I am a freak for rainbows. I have rainbow dishes, a board dedicated to rainbows on my Pinterest, and I organize pretty much anything I can get my hands on in rainbow order. Lily’s first birthday party was rainbow themed, complete with rainbow foods! The spectrum consumes me daily.  Well, now it’s time for my family to consume the spectrum every day!

Today I Ate a Rainbow was created by a SIMPLE reader named Kia Robertson. It is a tool intended to help parents establish healthy eating habits for our children starting at a young age, so that they carry those positive eating habits into adulthood.  This is a great tool for keeping track of the fruits and veggies that your child is eating every day, and it makes eating healthy fun at the same time! It’s pretty self explanatory – eat a serving of carrots then mark orange, eat a serving of grapes then mark purple – but check out the details of how to use the chart here for ideas on how to make this a fun interactive tool for your whole family! The Parent’s Corner also has a lot of good information on how to make good nutrition an active discussion in the home.

And then there’s the Rainbow Song.  Kia’s daughter Hannah (the awesome spokesmodel for Today I Ate a Rainbow) sings the song beautifully, but this kid is unbelievably cute with his explanation of the Rainbow Chart… “bye! I love you. bye.” OMG he’s the cutest:

You have to check out the In the Rainbow Kitchen with Hannah and Kia videos!  They are very informative, and very funny – complete with outtakes! I love the relationship betweek Kia and Hannah, and I hope that Lily and I have this awesome of a relationship as she gets older! Here’s my favorite Rainbow Kitchen episode – Kale Chips:

The Rainbow Kit comes with the tracking chart and corresponding magnets, a rainbow shopping list, and the book The Rainbow Bunch with a bookmark. The Rainbow Bunch is a story of 5 children who learn how healthy fruits and veggies really are and why it’s important to eat a rainbow of fruits and veggies every day. The book is beautifully illustrated and teaches good lessons!

As a mother who works outside the home, it will be nice to come home every day to see what Lily and Nana have marked on the rainbow chart. It gives me a way to be more involved in Lily’s nutrition than just doing the grocery shopping – I can talk with her about her daily eating habits when I get home from work. And it also gives me a way to make sure that Nana is helping Lily to eat her fruits and veggies!

We created the Today I Ate A Rainbow!™ chart to keep track of the produce that our daughter was eating as we found that sometimes when life got really busy we didn’t always live up to our expectations of ensuring she was eating her fruits and veggies!  We also wanted her to participate and take responsibility for her food choices in a fun and interactive way. We knew that if she ate produce from all the main colour groups every day, she would be getting a good variety of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. This chart was such a huge help to us with very successful results, we decided to make it available to other parents!  Our plan is to expand our line of products and services to encourage healthy eating for the whole family!
